Most neck pain isn’t caused by one dramatic event. It builds slowly, through repeated small stresses that stack up over time. A slightly forward head posture at your desk. A pillow that doesn’t support the natural curve of your neck. Hours of looking down at a phone. None of these feel like a big deal in the moment, but over weeks and months, they add up. Addressing these patterns is what separates temporary relief from lasting results.
“Although nothing replaces the effects of a chiropractic treatment, the right daily habits can help minimize neck symptoms and decrease frequency and severity of pain down the road.”
— Dr. Jarod Doster
Your Desk Setup Could Be the Problem
If you spend long hours at a computer, your workstation is worth a close look. Your monitor should sit at eye level so your head isn’t tilting down or craning forward. Your keyboard and mouse should allow your elbows to rest comfortably at roughly 90 degrees. (A stack of books under a monitor works surprisingly well as a quick fix.) The goal is to keep your ears stacked over your shoulders, not jutting forward in front of them.
Sleep Position Matters More Than You Think
Eight hours in a poor position can undo a lot of good work. Sleeping on your back or side with a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck is ideal. Stomach sleeping is hard on your neck because it forces your head into a rotated position for hours at a stretch. If you’re a stomach sleeper, transitioning to your side with a pillow between your knees can make a real difference over time.
Small Daily Habits That Protect Your Neck
Frequent breaks matter. A lot. If you’re sitting for long stretches, getting up every 30 minutes to move and reset your posture keeps tension from building. Simple chin tucks, shoulder rolls, and gentle neck stretches take less than two minutes and can meaningfully reduce strain throughout the day.
When Prevention Isn’t Enough
Good posture and daily habits are great but they can’t solve everything. That’s where Dr. Jarod Doster and Dr. Tanya Doster come in. Your goal shouldn’t be limited to “just” getting rid of your pain. Pain is your check engine light, not the underlying cause. Drs. Jarod and Tanya Doster will help identify what’s driving your neck pain and give you a plan that includes the in-office work and the at-home habits to support it.
